About us

REDcert - Your partner for
sustainability certification

REDcert GmbH was founded by leading associations and organizations of the German agricultural and biofuel economy in 2010 to support the practical implementation of the Systainability Ordinances and has been setting standards in the implementation of sustainability requirements in various sectors. Our aim is to offer companies along the entire value chain a reliable and practical-oriented certification solution.

Today, the REDcert-EU scheme is one of the leading certification schemes for sustainable biomass, renewable fuels and Recycled Carbon Fuels (RCF) in Germany and Europe. In 2015, we expanded our certification portfolio with the introduction of the REDcert² scheme, which was initially developed for the use of sustainable raw materials in the food and animal feed industry. In 2018, the scope of the REDcert² scheme was expanded to include the chemical industry. This sector in particular benefits from our approach of integrating sustainable and certified raw materials as an alternative to fossil raw materials, thereby making a signifikant contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and conserving resources.

The certification schemes of REDcert REDcert's certification systems not only enable companies to meet sustainability requirements, but also provide a strategic advantage by demonstrating sustainable production processes and reducing the long-term use of fossil resources.

With REDcert, you have an experienced partner at your side – supporting you in meeting the growing demands of global markets and ensuring compliance with international sustainability standards.

Together for a sustainable future – with REDcert by your side.

Shareholders

REDcert

Shareholders

To support the practical implementation of the Sustainability Ordinances, REDcert GmbH was founded by leading associations and organisations of the German agricultural and biofuel economy on 26 February 2010. The economic groups affected assumed joint responsibility for actively promoting biofuels and liquid biomass certified as sustainable.

The Shareholder Assembly defines the company’s strategic and economic goals but has no influence on the operation of the REDcert-EU scheme. This roles out any conflict of interest between their association activities and their activities as shareholders of REDcert. Their responsibilities are defined in the company by-laws.

The following associations are founders of the REDcert system and represent the main economic groups (i.a. affected by the Renewable Energy Directive):

Committees

Technical Committee
REDcert schemes

The Technical Committee is essential to the REDcert schemes. It defines the principles and contents for the respective certification scheme and develops the schemes, taking into account the interests of all affected economic groups. The Technical Committee has to advise the executive management in the areas entrusted to it. To meet these requirements, there is a Technical Committee for the REDcert-EU scheme and a Technical Committee for the REDcert² scheme for the chemical industry.

Responsibilities

The Technical Committee defines the principles and contents for the respective certification scheme and develops the schemes, taking into account the interests of all affected economic groups. The Technical Committee has to advise the executive management in the areas entrusted to it. The working methods of the Technical Committee are defined in the Rules of Procedure (RoP), where potential conflicts of interest and how they are handled are also addressed. The executive management must listen to the Technical Committee prior to decisions in the areas of responsibility transferred to this Technical Committee and must provide reasons for decisions made against the recommendations of the Technical Committee vis-à-vis the shareholders.

The Technical Committee of REDcert-EU convenes when necessitated by events.

The Technical Committee of REDcert² for the chemical industry convenes semi-annually.

Requirements for members

The members of the Technical Committee must have sound knowledge and technical and professional expertise in all of the economic areas covered by the respective certification scheme (REDcert-EU or REDcert²) and have to be familiar with the rules of the REDcert scheme and other branch related certification schemes (quality management, environmental management, energy management). The members appointed by the shareholders to the Technical Committees represent the various process steps and economic sectors included in the respective REDcert scheme.

Representatives from the sciences, government authorities and non-governmental organisations are involved when necessary.

Members

A list of the members of the REDcert-EU Technical Committee you can find here.

The REDcert Sanctions Committee is the committee established in the ‘sanction system’ of the REDcert certification schemes to penalise non-compliance with certification scheme requirements. The Sanctions Committee is an independent, neutral committee of REDcert.

Responsibilities

The Sanctions Committee carefully examines reported violations and makes well-founded decisions on suitable sanctions. It ensures that the integrity management guidelines are consistently applied and adhered to. Furthermore, the Sanctions Committee ensures that all procedures are carried out in a professional and legally compliant manner. Any sanctions imposed by the Sanctions Committee are implemented by REDcert GmbH.

The Sanctions Committee convenes when necessitated by events.

Requirements for Members

It is comprised of 3 members in which one member is a lawyer who is qualified to hold the office of judge. The members of the Sanction Committee come from the economic groups involved in the production chain or their industry organisations and are appointed by the shareholders. They have sound knowledge and technical and professional expertise in all of the economic areas covered by the certification schemes and are familiar with the rules of the REDcert schemes and other branch-related certification schemes (quality management, environmental management, energy management) but do not have potential conflicts of interests as a result of either former or current job related activities.
