REDcert²-use of sustainable biomass for material purposes in the chemical industry
With the introduction of the “Supplementary REDcert² scheme principles for the chemical industry”, REDcert is extending the scope of its REDcert² scheme to include an important economic sector in the area of biomass use for material purposes.
The chemical industry is also increasingly relying on the use of sustainably produced and certified biomass to replace fossil-based raw materials. It therefore makes an important contribution to reducing greenhouse gases and conserving fossil-based resources.
The highly complex chemical production processes pose a major challenge for providing evidence that fossil-based raw materials have been replaced by sustainable biomass. In order to meet the special requirements of the chemical industry, supplementary scheme principles have been formulated for the REDcert² certification scheme in which, among other things, a new methodological approach to biomass balancing is described which can be used as an alternative to traditional “mass balancing”. This approach is based on the principles of the CMS 71 standard and balances on the basis of the energy-related valence of the individual atomic components of the sustainable biomass and an equivalence analysis of the resulting products.
The extension of the balancing methodology combined with REDcert's expertise in the field of sustainability certification will significantly encourage and support sustainability initiatives in the chemical industry. REDcert also ensures uniform certification conditions and high-quality certification standards in this new area of application.
The supplementary scheme principles and checklists for the chemical industry can be found on our website at www.redcert.de under REDcert²/Material purposes.
Mr Hendrik-Benjamin Lerbs is available to answer any questions you may have about the REDcert² scheme in the area of biomass for material purposes, particularly for the chemical industry, or any other questions (Tel. 0049 228 3506115 or hendrik.lerbs@redcert.de).
